Happy Grieving

The community playlist

Somebody in this community put a song on and it said the thing they could not. Then somebody else did. This is what came of that.

Grief Songs That Get It was built by the people here, not by me. The songs that land when you are grieving, chosen by people who are.

Grief Songs That Get ItIf the player does not appear, your browser or network is blocking Spotify. Open the playlist in Spotify instead.

That player is Spotify's, not ours, so it loads from them. You can also open the playlist in Spotify.

There is no order to it and no right way to use it. Some people put it on for the drive. Some go straight to the one track that undoes them, on purpose, because there are days when you want to be undone rather than distracted. Some leave it playing in another room and never really listen.

A song can do the thing a sentence cannot. It does not ask you to explain, it does not need you to be further along than you are, and it will sit in the room with you for four minutes without once telling you how you should be feeling.

If there is a song that belongs on here, send it to me and tell me who it reminds you of, if you want to. That part is yours to keep or to share.

More on music and loss

Music holds grief in a way that catches people off guard, in the supermarket and on the anniversary alike. There is a longer piece on that: the song, the concert, the pilgrimage.
